Workshop content
Colours and Tools
We will look at the paints and tools we will need throughout the workshop. It can be rather daunting at first when we face a large selection of colours – which reds, blues, yellows should you will pick? What about oranges, greens, violets, purples, and browns? And of which brands?
It may not be so surprising to some, but we don’t need to have a 24 set of colours when we start learning – even 12 would be quite enough. I will show you the way of making a full palette with just a few colours in hand.
We will also look at other essentials: brushes, paper, and a few other handy wee things to help our painting.
Primary Triads
In this session, we will learn to mix colours using primaries. Primaries can be of two kinds: Red, Blue and Yellow / Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow. Using colour temperatures (warm and cool), we can create many secondaries*:* oranges, greens, violets/purples.
The focus will be on Warm and Cool triads, as well as my usual go-to, muted/earthy triad. We will learn how to determine the temperature of the colours and how that knowledge helps us to mix the colour we want for our artworks.
Secondaries and Convenient Mixes
Secondary colours are oranges, greens, and violets/purples. These can usually be created by mixing the primaries. Some of these secondaries are assigned by their pigments, while many are of mixes. We will be looking at which of the secondaries are useful for a beginner’s palette, bringing in a lot of versatility and which convenient mixes are great to have.
This review of colours will include ochres (browns) and neutrals(greys and blacks).
Practice on a piece: Blooming Cats
In this session, we practice our colour mixing skills on a canvas! We will paint a cat with flowers.
Ame will provide two template drawings you can trace onto your watercolour/mixed media paper choice, but you are welcome to come up with your own design.
At the end of this session, Ame will take questions from you about colours and colour mixing.
RECOMMENDED MATERIALS
Your Title Goes Here
Recommended Paper
Please make sure the paper is suitable for watercolours and at least 250gsm. Ame’s personal recommendations are Hahnemühle Bamboo Mixed Media 265gsm, Hahnemühle Britannia MATT 300gsm, and Strathmore 400 series 300gsm.
Recommended Paints
For true beginners and those who aren’t familiar with pigments and colour names – I recommend getting a good, inexpensive set of palette such as the ones below, which are very affordable and of good quality!
- Winsor and Newton Cotman 12 Half Pan Set
- Van Gogh Travel Half Pan Set (of 12 or 16)
IF you are ready to get your own paints, here are my recommendations. You do not need to get all the colours, but please prepare at least six colours (both warm and cool primaries) and Burnt Sienna.
Warm Primaries:
Ultramarine Blue(PB29), Nickel Azo Yellow(PY150) or Hansa Yellow Deep(PY65), Pyrrole Red/Permanent Red Deep(PR254)
Cool Primaries:
Phthalo Blue Green Shade(PB15:3), Lemon Yellow(PY3) or Permanent Yellow Light(PY151), Permanent Magenta(PR122) or Quinacridone Rose(PV19) or Pyrrole Crimson(PR264)
Muted/Earthy(optional):
Perylene Maroon(PR179) or Indian Red(PR101), Yellow Ochre(PY42) or Raw Sienna(PBr7), Indanthrone Blue(PB60) or Cerulean Blue(PB35/36)
Essential for Mixing Neutrals:
Phthalo Green Blue Shade(PG7, Also known as Viridian in some brands) and Burnt Sienna(PBr7/PR101)
Recommended Brushes
A round and a flat brush of size between 8 to 10 would do nicely. Please make sure they are made for watercolours. There is nothing more frustrating than a brush that doesn’t hold enough water or pigments!
